Admissions Procedures 2008-2009

Paul Cuffee School admits a new class of Kindergarten students each year (usually 45-48 students) and accepts applicants in the other grades if openings occur. Acceptance is based on a lottery and siblings are given preference.

Overview

The Paul Cuffee School is a public charter school open to students residing in Providence, R.I.  We offer grades K-8 and anticipate an expansion to eventually reach K-12 when funding and the appropriate facility is secured. Until the high school is ready, eighth grade students and their families will receive guidance with next school placement.

In accord with Rhode Island Law, students are admitted to the school by lottery. Charter Schools in Providence are also required to have a student community which reflects the rich multiculturalism and racial diversity of Providence.

To be eligible for admission:

1. Any child of school age who is a resident of the city of Providence may apply for admission to the Paul Cuffee School. Students must be 5 years old on or before September 1st, 2008 to be admitted and enrolled into Kindergarten and 6 years old on or by September 1st, 2008 to be admitted and enrolled into 1st grade.

2. Parents/legal guardians must complete and submit the one-page student application form by March 7, 2008 for the 2008-2009 school year.

3. Enrollment preference will be given to applicants whose siblings are enrolled in the school.  When a lottery takes place, siblings will be admitted first if space is available.  Where a waiting list exists for a particular grade, siblings will be placed 1st on the waiting list.

Students Who Are Admitted

• We will mail acceptance letters and an enrollment contract to you following the lottery. The enrollment contract will need to be signed and returned to the Admissions Office within fifteen business days after the postmarked date on the notification letter.  Please remember that the enrollment contract must be signed by students and parents/legal guardians.  After confirmation is received, the following documents will be requested:

1.      Proof of Residency in Providence
2.      Birth Certificate
3.      Health/Immunization Records
4.      Special Education (IEP/504) Records, if applicable
5.      Last Report Card and/or Prior School Records
6.      Student Information Forms
7.      Home Language Survey
8.      Authorization to Release School Records Form

• If we do not hear from you within fifteen days, we will make every attempt to contact you before the deadline.  If the above mentioned forms have not been returned by the deadline, the student’s admission space may be given to the next eligible student on the waiting list.  Parents who will not be available at the home address listed on the application form during the notification period should contact the Paul Cuffee School to make arrangements for communication.

• Students must attend the “Welcome and Screening Day” in May (date to be announced).  This will enable the school to plan for the 2008-2009 academic year.  If you are unable to attend, please contact us before that day or your child’s spot may be given away.

• Students must attend the new student orientation in August (date to be announced).

Waiting List Applicants

• Students who apply to the school but are not successful in gaining enrollment through the lottery will be placed on the waiting list in the order that they were drawn in the lottery.

•
Parents/legal guardians of wait-listed students will be mailed a form to confirm whether or not they wish for their child to remain on the active waiting list for the 2008-2009 school year.

• Parents/legal guardians will have approximately one month after the postmarked date on the notification letter to return the form to the Admissions Office.  If we do not hear from you, and if no form has been returned by the deadline, the student will be removed from the waiting list.  Parents are responsible to notify the school of any address change during the notification period.

• In accordance with Rhode Island Department of Education enrollment guidelines for charter schools, waiting lists will not be carried over from year to year.  Each year, a new lottery of all applicants - those on the previous waiting list as well as all new applicants - will be conducted. Applicants still on the waiting list must reapply to the school to be eligible for the lottery the following year.
