Basketball Tournament Builds Friendship and Awareness of Annual Fund

PCS 5th grade teacher, Darline Berrios (far right) congratulates 1st grade teaching partner, Christian Staton (far left) and his team for winning the first annual PCS Faculty, Staff and Friends 3 on 3 Tournament.

Darline Berrios, Paul Cuffee fifth grade teacher, conceived, organized, and hosted a Basketball Tournament for Faculty, Staff, and Friends of Paul Cuffee School. Held in our Middle School gymnasium, the Tournament featured five teams of 3-4 players for a competitive 3 on 3 tournament. Each team played the other four teams, and the top four teams advanced to the semi-finals. The two victors played for the championship, and a team comprised of one of our Lower School teaching partners, Chris Staton, and his cousins and friends, won the first annual tournament.

The tournament raised funds for our Annual Fund, whose goal this year is to raise $150,000. That money will be used to provide singular experiences for our students, such as our fifth grade students traveling to Newport to tour the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter, Willow, our middle school students sailing on the Rozalia, our first grade students learning to swim at the local YMCA, or a student needing support and attending our Summer Academy. Annual Fund dollars support our performing arts, our sports programs, our technology, and our library resources. So this tournament, conceived in fun and camaraderie, will support our mission to educate, inspire, and uplift the Youth of Providence.
