Middle School Students Embrace Connection Beyond Screens

At Paul Cuffee School, helping students develop healthy habits — both online and offline — is an important part of their growth. Recently, our middle school students wrapped up a library unit focused on healthy technology use and digital well-being.

Throughout the unit, students explored what balanced media use looks like and how screen time can impact friendships, sleep, focus, and overall wellness. They also discussed global efforts to support young people’s digital health, including recent social media bans for youth in countries such as Australia and Spain, and considered what those decisions might mean for their own lives.

To conclude the unit, students participated in an “offline hangout” challenge. They were encouraged to spend time doing something fun without any technology — connecting, creating, and engaging face-to-face. Afterwards, they voted on what they would ultimately prefer: spending time with friends offline or having access to their phones.

The results were both surprising and inspiring. The majority of students chose the offline hangout — confirming that they value real connection, creativity, and meaningful time together.

We are grateful for the learning opportunities that make moments like these possible and proud of our students for embracing connection beyond screens.
