School Graduation Requirements

Paul Cuffee School’s graduation by proficiency system is based on the requirements of the Rhode Island Department of Education. In the 2022-2023 school year, RIDE released updated requirements for graduation to start with the class of 2028. The requirements listed directly below are for students graduating now through 2027. Updated requirements are listed further below. 

Requirements for individuals graduating through 2027:

  • Capstone Project
  • Senior Portfolio
  • Course Requirements
      • 4 credits of English
      • 4 credits of math
      • 3 credits of history
      • 3 credits of science
      • .5 credits of financial literacy 
      • 5.5 elective credits

Requirements for individuals graduating 2028 and beyond:

  • Capstone Project
  • Senior Portfolio
  • Course & Proficiency Requirements
      • 4 credits of English
      • 4 credits of math, including Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2
      • 3 credits of history and demonstrated proficiency in civics
      • 3 credits of science, 2 must be a lab science
      • 2 credits of world language which must be sequential and the same language
      • .5 credits of financial literacy 
      • 3 credits of fine arts, health & physical education, and computer science
      • 1 credit of college preparatory coursework (in addition to the credit requirements listed above)

Students work toward these requirements throughout their time in high school.
