In 2010, while Assistant Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences at URI, Earl Smith was introduced to the Paul Cuffee School community. He soon became a beloved friend, trusted mentor, an actively engaged member of the School’s Board of Trustees, and a dedicated Board President. Sadly, an illness prematurely claimed his life on March 1, 2022.
Passionate about supporting students’ health, education, and well-being, Earl was a strong advocate for social and racial justice, educational equity, and a statewide academic curriculum that is reflective of our shared history and multicultural population. His friendship and impact will be long remembered.
To honor our late brother Earl’s legacy, and his example of integrity, humility, and perseverance on the pathway to success, the Paul Cuffee School is proud to announce a $25,000 fundraising campaign to award the first annual Earl N. Smith III Memorial Scholarship of $1,000 in June 2023 to a Paul Cuffee graduating senior.
The School has raised in excess of $11,000 in gifts and pledges to date and is actively seeking donations and multiple-year commitments from friends and family members who wish to help Paul Cuffee School fully fund an endowed scholarship in Earl’s memory.
Donations of all sizes are needed to complete this campaign on time. Your generous contribution today will help support a Class of 2023 graduating senior, who like Earl, is determined to complete his or her higher education while being a source of support to others along the way.
