Earl N. Smith III Memorial Scholarship Fund

In 2010, while Assistant Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences at URI, Earl Smith was introduced to the Paul Cuffee School community. He soon became a beloved friend, trusted mentor, an actively engaged member of the School’s Board of Trustees, and a dedicated Board President. Sadly, an illness prematurely claimed his life on March 1, 2022.

Passionate about supporting students’ health, education, and well-being, Earl was a strong advocate for social and racial justice, educational equity, and a statewide academic curriculum that is reflective of our shared history and multicultural population. His friendship and impact will be long remembered.

To honor our late brother Earl’s legacy, and his example of integrity, humility, and perseverance on the pathway to success, generous friends and family members have raised more than $25,000 to establish the Earl N. Smith III Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation. The School is actively seeking recurring donations and multiple-year commitments to continue the tradition of awarding this scholarship in Earl’s memory every year.

Your generous contribution today will help support an exemplary graduating senior, who like Earl, is determined to complete his or her higher education while being a source of support to others along the way. The first award recipient was announced on May 31st, 2023. The story and pictures can be found here: Proud Moments.
