In 2010, while Assistant Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences at URI, Earl Smith was introduced to the Paul Cuffee School community. He soon became a beloved friend, trusted mentor, an actively engaged member of the School’s Board of Trustees, and a dedicated Board President. Sadly, an illness prematurely claimed his life on March 1, 2022.
Passionate about supporting students’ health, education, and well-being, Earl was a strong advocate for social and racial justice, educational equity, and a statewide academic curriculum that is reflective of our shared history and multicultural population. His friendship and impact will be long remembered.
To honor our late brother Earl’s legacy, and his example of integrity, humility, and perseverance on the pathway to success, the Paul Cuffee School is raising $25,000 to endow the Earl N. Smith III Memorial Scholarship Fund. Donors have already contributed more than $15,000 in gifts and pledges and the first award recipient was announced on May 31st, 2023. The story and pictures can be found here: Proud Moments.
The School is actively seeking donations and multiple-year commitments from friends and family members who wish to help Paul Cuffee School fully fund the endowed scholarship in Earl’s memory. Gifts of all sizes are needed to continue the tradition of awarding this scholarship in Earl’s memory every year. Your generous contribution today will help support an exemplary graduating senior, who like Earl, is determined to complete his or her higher education while being a source of support to others along the way.
