5th Graders Donate Bowls to the “Souper Bowl”

Mermaid bowl donated by fifth grader, Eliana Waldmanwerth

Ms. Michelle Carden, our lower school art teacher, worked with our neighbor, United Natural Foods (UNFI), on a fundraiser that UNFI held: Souper Bowl XLVII. The event, held on Friday, February 1, benefited UNFI’s Associate Relief Fund which seeks to support employees who have emergency illnesses, loss or damage of property, or extreme financial hardship.

This year’s Souper Bowl raised over $1,500 dollars, in part due to the beautiful bowls handcrafted by our fifth graders.  Ms. Lisa Madsen, our contact at UNFI for our Empty Bowls program, commented, “All of the bowls sold….Everyone commented on how cute they were especially the creative monkey, elephant, and mermaid!”

UNFI collaborates with us on our Empty Bowl Project organized by our fourth graders, so we were pleased to assist them with their fundraiser. This year’s fifth grade students happily donated their talent to the fundraiser; yet another example of our students’ understanding what it means to be a community member.
