Guest Author Peter Johnson

The 5th grade Boys’ Book Club at Paul Cuffee School was delighted to host local author and Providence College professor Peter Johnson for a book talk recently. The boys had just finished his recently published book The Amazing Adventures of John Smith Jr. AKA Houdini, a story set right here in Providence, Rhode Island.

Professor Johnson spoke of his childhood experiences growing up in a steel town as the inspiration for his book. He shared that he played on streets just like theirs and recognized the somewhat quirky neighbors who evolved into characters in his book.

Professor Johnson was able to unlock the process of writing and book editing and revealed how it feels to receive constructive criticism. He spoke about when to change writing based on feedback and when to stand firm as a writer. Professor Johnson clearly communicated the high value he places on boys as readers. He affirmed the significance of boys and men to family unity as well as the power of family to overcome great challenges.
