PCS Sophomore Wins 2nd Prize in State-Wide Poetry Out Loud Competition

PCS 10th grader Sebastian Yidana won 2nd place at the 2013 Rhode Island Poetry Out Loud Contest

PCS 10th grader Sebastian Yidana, reciting poems by William Matthews, Bob Hicok, and Arthur O’Shaughnessy, finished second in the Rhode Island Poetry Out Loud Contest held at Bishop Hendricken High School. Under the direction of Ms. Thoma, our 10th grade humanities teacher, Sebastian gained confidence in his ability, stepping on stage, and wowing the audience with his words. For his good work, Sebastian collected $100 in prize money, as well as a $200 stipend for our library for the purpose of purchasing books.

The Poetry Out Loud event is a recitation contest that has been created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. Its purpose is to increase the awareness of the beauty and power of performing poetry and connecting with one of humanity’s most ancient art forms.
