Jupiter Aligns with Mars for Third Grade Solar System Fair

(Left) Isaac Oviedo displays his research and model of Jupiter, the largest planet in the solar system and one of the brightest objects in the night sky. (Right) Madel Cabreja researched Mars, the “Red Planet”, a neighboring planet to Earth and, at certain points in its orbit, matching Jupiter for brightness in the night sky.

As part of the 3rd grade science curriculum, Paul Cuffee students spend two months studying the solar system. During the project, the students create scrapbooks filled with facts and information about their topic. They learn how to research, paraphrase, note take and edit/revise. The scrapbook becomes their guide for their final presentation.

The Unit culminates with each student’s depiction and presentation of a planet or phenomenon of interest.
