The Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) included two Paul Cuffee Upper School students among their October nominees for their statewide RIIL student-athlete of the month award. Senior Matt Perea and eleventh grader, Jailene Colon were selected by coaches, teachers, and the Upper School administration to be recognized along with other student-athletes across the state. Below are the submitted entries. Please join us in congratulating these two Cuffee exemplars!
Jailene Colon is a 4 year player for the PCS girls’ soccer team, and 3 year starting catcher on the softball team with one year to go. Jailene is a perfect example of being a student-athlete as she currently holds a 3.67 GPA, while taking multiple AP courses. Jailene sits on many school committees including the Principal’s Cabinet, Student Senate, and Debate Team. Her infectious personality and work ethic has contributed to Jailene being a leader on and off the field.
Matt Perea is a 4 year starter on defense for the boys’ soccer team and 3 year captain on the outdoor track team. Matt also participates on the enrichment club volleyball team, and is a leader on and off the field/court. Academically, Matt currently holds a 4.049 GPA and is a finalist for the prestigious QuestBridge Scholarship. Matt has worked in Paul Cuffee’s Technology department for the past 2 summers and currently interns in that department. Matt is planning to study Aerospace Engineering next year at either MIT or Georgia Tech University.
