Each year, our school librarian and teachers plan a host of special literacy-based activities for Reading Week. To encourage reading for pleasure as a lifetime pursuit, adults from the community sign up to read aloud to a classroom of students for 20-30 minutes. Guest Readers often bring their own favorite children’s book or read one selected by the school librarian or classroom teacher. Rosemary Raygada from Neighborhood Health Plan borrowed a book she loves from her public library and brought special activities to go with the story.
This year, our Reading Week theme was titled: An Ocean of Possibilities, which aligns with the school’s maritime curriculum. The grand finale involved an all-school read-in, with students, teachers, and guest readers dressed as their favorite story book characters. Thanks to Neighborhood Health Plan’s generous sponsorship, a pocket-sized flashlight was given to every child to enjoy the magic of reading “after dark.”
