What happens when 42 rising ninth and tenth graders spend two summer weeks together to learn math and apply math concepts to real world problems? They boost their math performance and have a great time working and learning together.
This past summer the Paul Cuffee School held an Algebra 1 Readiness Camp, taught by middle school and upper school teachers Mr. Boss, Mr. Bourget, Mr. Geoghegan and Ms. Santana. Funded by the Rhode Island Department of Education and United States Department of Education, Paul Cuffee was awarded this competitive grant in order to help prepare students for the demands of high school math. A core feature of the program was problem-based learning in the area of personal finance. Students demonstrated improved skills, and greater interest and confidence in using mathematics.
