With Gratitude, We Remember Joop Nagtegaal

Dear Paul Cuffee School Community Members,

As we reflect on the people whose generosity and care have shaped our community over the years, we pause to honor the life of Joop Nagtegaal, who passed away on November 30, 2025. He gave so much of his heart, vision, and generosity to Paul Cuffee School.

His connection to our school began after visiting a 5th grade boat design presentation—an experience that sparked a lasting commitment to our mission. He went on to serve as Board President and as a dedicated member of the Finance Committee and the David Burnham Maritime Fund Committee, helping guide major developments that shaped our campuses and strengthened opportunities for students.

Joop played an important role in transformative projects, including the purchase of the former Living Room property—now home to the Lower School turf playground and parking area—as well as supporting the purchase and renovation of the Paul Cuffee High School campus and helping to secure funding for a school van.

Together, Joop and his wife, Ria, have long been extraordinary champions of our students and educators. Their generosity made it possible to establish and sustain our librarian position, enriching literacy and learning for generations of children. They have also been devoted supporters of the Paul Cuffee Fund, the Wiggins Fund, the David Burnham Maritime Fund, the Earl N. Smith III Scholarship Fund, and many other giving initiatives that have expanded access to summer enrichment, maritime education, the arts, and community partnerships for countless Paul Cuffee students—often inspiring others through generous matching gifts.

Joop will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and deep belief in the promise of our students. His legacy lives on in the opportunities our students experience and the community he helped strengthen.

We are grateful for Joop—for his friendship, generosity, and the love he and Ria have shown to our school community. Our hearts remain with Ria, their sons, grandchildren, and all who loved him. We invite you to keep the Nagtegaal family in your thoughts as we honor and remember Joop’s remarkable life.

With gratitude and remembrance,
