On June 3rd, Paul Cuffee Upper School gathered to honor Earl’s legacy and celebrate the 4th recipient of the Earl N. Smith III Memorial Scholarship.
We are proud to announce that this year’s award was presented to Morolayo Oladosu, Class of 2026, in recognition of her commitment to educational equity and service to her community.
Morolayo’s journey reflects a deep belief in the power of education to transform lives. Her passion began as a volunteer English language tutor at her local library, where she supported a young student who had recently emigrated from the Dominican Republic to Providence. That experience shaped her belief that every student deserves access to meaningful learning, support, and opportunity—especially those from underserved communities.
She has continued this work through hands-on experience in elementary education and education policy, including engagement with Rhode Island state legislators and judges. Each intentional step has strengthened her commitment to advocacy and to expanding educational opportunity for all students.
At the announcement event, last year’s recipient, Deily Casimiro Pena, had the honor of announcing this year’s award winner, continuing the tradition of passing this recognition from one student to the next.
Kevin Smith, Earl’s brother, also spoke movingly about Earl’s legacy, reminding us of his belief in the inherent value and dignity of every individual and his lifelong dedication to inclusion, equity, and student success. His words served as a powerful reminder of the values that continue to guide this scholarship.
Morolayo embodies those same values—through her purpose, her service, and her unwavering commitment to educational opportunity. She is a truly deserving recipient of this award. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Morolayo and her family, and we look forward to all she will accomplish in the years ahead.
